 Here, too, contradictory approaches in clinical, ethical and legal debates are visible. Should love dolls and sex robots of all kinds be explored as possible therapeutic tools related to various paraphilic disorders and other sexual pathologies? Or should at least some of them be criminalized immediately, with the implication that new forms of doll- and robot-related sexual deviance have been introduced and must be prosecuted?

The only other study we are aware of involved students in a psychology course at a university in the United States (USA), of whom only one person admitted to using a sex doll and who were asked about their attitudes towards sex doll use. The class was predominantly female, making this study a contrast rather than an adjunct to studies of sex doll owners, which generally appear to be male.

A total of 345 respondents completed the survey. The majority of respondents (81%) were female, white (70% White, 15% Black, 8% Hispanic, 3% Multiracial, 3% Asian and 1% Other) and straight (90%). Almost three quarters (72%) were either freshmen or sophomores. Almost half (48%) were emotionally in a committed or engaged relationship, 37% were not in a relationship, and 14% were with different people.

Separate from the five main themes of motivation to have a Lifelike sex doll, there were two themes related to the common behaviors involved in interacting with one's doll. The first referred to "physical intimacy" and included physical interactions such as: sexual activity, physical forms of affection such as cuddling, fondling, grooming, and kissing, and engaging in non-sexual physical activities such as watching TV, eating, giving gifts, and playing games "together " play with the dolls.

The second issue seemed to involve "communication" with the Sex Doll, both emotionally and verbally. This appeared to be characterized by talking to the puppet and imagining responses from the puppet. Some doll owners seemed to develop a rich imaginative life in creating a character and personality for their dolls and also thinking about what they might think or say.
